Our Story
Heartsong was first conceived in 2003 when Founder and Director, Melinda Chiew, struggled to find a truly special “Congratulations on your new baby” present for her friend who had just given birth to her first child.
Melinda wanted to send something practical, unique and meaningful, which reflected the little “blessing from above” that her friend had just given birth to. She was stirred to create a new line of babywear that was beautifully distinctive and expressed inspirational and uplifting messages.
Why Organic Cotton?
After doing research into cotton production, Melinda became concerned about the poisons that conventional cotton production introduced into the environment and human health. She was also concerned about the sweatshop conditions that third-world workers were being forced into.
She became convinced that Heartsong’s kids wear should be ethically-made out of certified organic cotton and sustainable blends. “Children are a gift, and deserve to be free from toxic chemicals that are often found in non-organic clothing,” Melinda says. “The environment is also a gift and we have a responsibility to take care of it.”
Charity of the Month
The need to “defend the weak and orphans; do justice to the oppressed and needy” has always weighed heavily on Melinda’s heart, and so in December 2010, Heartsong’s CHARITY OF THE MONTH program was born. Each month a different nominated charity is featured on Heartsong’s newsletter, homepage, Twitter and Facebook page to promote a worthy cause, rally support and/or raise funds for that charitable organisation.
Where did the name 'Heartsong' come from?
The name “Heartsong” was largely inspired by the Casting Crowns song “Lifesong”. Your heartsong is what emanates from your heart’s desire – your life’s passion, if you like. Melinda’s passion is to make a difference by caring for the environment, children and third-world producers. What’s your heartsong?
